Education

Dr Vishan Ramloutan embarked on his academic voyage at St. Michael's Primary School, where he received his elementary education from Grade R to Grade 7. Continuing his educational journey, he attended Avoca Secondary School from Grade 8 to Grade 12, where his exceptional academic performance resulted in him graduating with six distinctions. This paved the way for him to pursue higher education at the esteemed Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2008.

Driven by his dedication to urological medicine, Dr Ramloutan continued his education at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, specialising in Urology from 2012 to 2017. He earned his Fellowship from the College of Urology of South Africa (FCUROL (SA)) in 2017 and completed his Master of Medicine in Urology (MMED (UROL)) from UKZN in August 2019. Dr Ramloutan further expanded his expertise by obtaining certifications in advanced urological procedures, including Rezum (Prostate steam therapy) and laparoscopic surgery from the University of Strasbourg in France.

Experience

Dr Ramloutan's professional journey includes invaluable experiences across various medical institutions. He completed his medical internship at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital/Addington Hospital Complex from 2009 to 2010, followed by a year of community service at Kimberley Hospital Complex in 2011, where he worked in both the Oncology and General Surgery departments. Subsequently, he served as a Urology Registrar at St. Aidan's Mission Regional Hospital/Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital from 2012 to 2015, gaining comprehensive training in urological care.

His commitment to advancing urological care is evident in his role as a Urology Medical Officer at St. Aidan's Mission Regional Hospital from 2016 to 2019. Dr Ramloutan has been instrumental in pioneering laparoscopic surgery, establishing the laparoscopic surgery unit at St. Aidan's Hospital in 2019. Additionally, he has contributed significantly to the field as a Specialist Urology Consultant, a position he has held since April 2020 at St. Aidan's Mission Regional Hospital, Ethekwini Hospital, and Hibiscus Cato Ridge Private Hospital.

Throughout his career, Dr Ramloutan has demonstrated a commitment to advancing medical knowledge through research and publication. He has published three articles in medical journals, further enhancing the understanding and treatment of urological conditions. Dr Ramloutan also completed a Master’s thesis in Prostate Cancer.

In recognition of his exceptional dedication and proficiency in Family Medicine, Dr Ramloutan received a Merit Award in 2008, highlighting his outstanding academic and professional achievements.

In April 2022, Dr Vishan Ramloutan extended his commitment to providing high-quality urological care by opening his private practice at Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital, further enhancing access to specialised urological services in the KwaZulu-Natal region.
