What are benign prostate conditions?
Benign prostate conditions are non-cancerous conditions that affect the prostate gland, a small walnut or ping pong ball-sized gland located at the bottom of the bladder right in front of the rectal area, deep within the groin.
What are obstructive symptoms?
The urethra can become obstructed, making it challenging to urinate despite the increased urge to urinate frequently. As a result, men frequently strain (as if to begin a bowel movement) to prompt a continuous urinary stream.
How do you treat benign prostate conditions?
- Anatomical Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate (AEEP): AEEP involves the entire extraction of the benign prostatic hyperplasia portion of the prostate gland with a camera through the urethra (urine passage) instead of a cut.
- Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP): HoLEP is a surgical procedure for those diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia which relies on short pulses of laser energy beams to extract tissue from the prostate gland. It is an example of Anatomical Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate (AEEP)
- Rezum water vapour: Rezum therapy is performed right inside the urologist’s practice. Each treatment is done in 9 seconds, involving clean water vapour being administered through the targeted prostate tissue, causing the enlarged prostate tissue to shrink. The size of the prostate gland determines the amount of treatments. When the extra prostate tissue shrinks, the urethra opens up, thus minimising BPH
- Simple Prostatectomy: an operation either done via a cut below the navel or via keyhole surgery (laparoscopically). The obstructing enlarged part of the prostate is removed, but the outer part (capsule) of the prostate is left.
Additional, less common reasons for simple prostatectomy include the following:
- Inability to empty the bladder.
- Frequent prostate bleeding
- Presence of bladder stones with an abnormally large prostate.
- Slowed urination.
- Hydronephrosis as a result of urinary retention.
